LUNALAND-1 & LUNAORB-1

ISS and Private Space Club (PSC) are proud to announce its first Moon related robotic project. LUNALAND-1 is a robotic Lander that will land on the Moon and be able to roam on the surface of the Moon and do a variety of observations and research but also can be driven remotely from Earth by paying customers or Platinum Private Space Club members. It will utilize the best available robotic technology in the US and around the world including some technology or systems developed by various teams who have joined recent Google Lunar X Prize competition.

ISS and LUNALAND-1 are not joining the Lunar X PRIZE Race (some proposed lunar robots from such are shown on the left). LUNALAND program is a long term project being developed by ISS to fly multiple automated Moon landing missions with a variety of robotic Lander configurations and purposes and not part of an one shot race.

The Google Lunar X PRIZE is a $30 million international competition to safely land a robot on the surface of the Moon, travel 500 meters over the lunar surface, and send images and data back to the Earth. Teams must be at least 90% privately funded and must be registered to compete by December 31, 2010.

The first team to land on the Moon and complete the mission objectives will be awarded $20 million; the full first prize is available until December 31, 2012. After that date, the first prize will drop to $15 million. The second team to do so will be awarded $5 million. Another $5 million will awarded in bonus prizes. The final deadline for winning the prize is December 31, 2014.

LUNAORB-1 is a robotic Moon orbiter that will relay many pictures and other surface data and observations as well as communication from LUNALAND rovers back to Earth. LUNALAND-1 and LUNAORB-1 will be launched together on the same rocket such and one of either Atlas, Delta or Taurus configurations.

ISS and PSC are in the initial phase of project development and soon LOIs will be signed with various companies in connection with LUNALAND-1 and LUNAORB-1 project development, design, testing, launch vehicle, launch services, robotics, payload integration and checkout, communication, and other requirements for a successful robotic Moon mission.;
